The Katzenjammers, Princeton's first co-ed a cappella group and the first co-ed group in the nation, was founded in 1973 by Peter Urquhart '74 and Maria Danly '74. Peter was the music director of the all-male Nassoons and Mimi was the music director of the all-female Tigerlilies, Princeton's oldest single-sex groups. Their diverse repertoire from Bach to the Beatles and their wide range of voices formed the basis of a new musical style, a completely different breed of a cappella, in the midst of hundreds of single-sex groups nationwide. They have released ten albums, including their fifth album, Midnight Comes Around (1995), which won the Best Arrangement award for the song "Round Midnight" in the 1996 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards. “Round Midnight” captures the romance of the late-night arch sings. Today, the group continues to value variety in its music for the purposes of both entertainment and musical integrity. The Katzenjammers regularly perform jazz, classical, secular, sacred, and pop music.
